Course Objectives:

This course thematically examines the history of the interaction of the West with the rest of the World from the 18th Century until the period right after the Second World War. It is designed as both a basic survey of the major issues of this period and as an introduction to the study of history at the university level. An understanding of the contemporary world requires knowledge about how this world came to be what it is. The past, present and future are not separate domains: the present is a product of the past, and what happened in the past helps to shape the future. History is the pursuit of interpretations of the past based on the research and analysis of surviving evidence. Historians follow rules of evidence and seek to understand the issues they discuss by rigorously researching the context of the past. However, historians also make sense of the past through the prism of their own culture and the issues of the present: this is why each generation asks new questions about the past, and why historical interpretations are never static or monolithic. Judgments about the past are constantly being revised and re-interpreted based on new questions and on the researching of new evidence. Historians sometimes disagree over these interpretations; sometimes they disagree over the evidence used to support these interpretations; sometimes over what actually counts as evidence. This course aims to make some sense of these disagreements while at the same time building student knowledge of the development of our modern world.

This course aims to challenge students on three levels:

  • first, to think about historical interpretation and the nature of historical evidence;
  • second, to develop analytical and critical reading abilities, time-management and note-taking skills, and to improve oral and written communication skills;
  • and third, to encourage intellectual curiosity about, and provide a solid grounding of knowledge in, key events and concepts that shaped the globe over the course of the period c. 1750 to c. 1950.

Method of Assessment:

Document Analysis Essay: ( 1 @ 2000 words [8 pages] )= 25%

Reading Responses: (5 @ 5% each) = 25%

Online Midterm: (T/F and Multiple Choice Questions) = 20%

Online Final Exam: (T/F, Multiple Choice and Short Answer Questions) = 30%


Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:

A 5% per day penalty will be applied for unexcused late assignments. Reading Responses and Document Analysis Essay must be uploaded on Avenue to Learn no later than midnight on the assigned due date, unless otherwise accommodated.

Online Midterm must be completed within the 12 hour time-window provided.

Online Final Exam must be completed within the 12 hour time-window provided.

Academic Dishonesty

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
